Malawi is intensifying preparations for the Regional 5 Youth Games, set to take place this July in Namibia. The Sports Council of Malawi has announced that the final phase of preparations will begin in April during the off-school season in Blantyre.

Athletes in Malawi have been training since August 2024, starting with a selection process that involved 460 athletes.

The second phase, a developmental camp, was held from December 22, 2024, to January 2, 2025, with 350 athletes participating across 14 sports disciplines, including football, netball, boxing, swimming, volleyball, tennis, and others.

According to Ediga Mtulumbwa, the council’s Public Relations Officer, the camp was a success, and they are pleased with the progress.

“The next step is the recruitment of athletes from various sports disciplines for the final camping phase, which will take place this April,” said Mtulumbwa.

The government is sponsoring the trip to Namibia and will provide basic necessities for the athletes. However, the council is seeking additional support from well-wishers to address other needs during the third camp and the games themselves.

The Regional 5 Youth Games are a significant event, bringing together athletes from Southern African countries, as well as some invited nations.

Malawi previously hosted the games in 2022, with events held at the Bingu National Stadium, Griffin Sayenda Complex, and other venues in Lilongwe from December 2-11.

During the 2022 games, Team Malawi performed exceptionally well, winning 44 medals across disciplines such as netball, basketball, boxing, and football.

The Regional 5 Youth Games continue to provide a valuable platform for Malawian athletes to showcase their talents and gain experience competing against some of the best athletes in the region.
