Mwisho Mhango was the hero for the Malawi Under-20 National Team today, scoring both goals in a vital 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe to kick off their 2025 COSAFA Region 5 Games campaign. The thrilling encounter took place at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Namibia.

Knowing they faced a challenging Group A that includes hosts Namibia and continental powerhouse Angola, Malawi understood the importance of a strong start against six-time COSAFA men’s Under-20 champions, Zimbabwe, who last lifted the trophy in 2007.

The Junior Flames wasted no time in asserting their attacking intent, and their persistence paid off in the 24th minute. Mhango, displaying clinical finishing, opened the scoring after receiving a well-placed pass from his captain, Misheck Billiati, sending Malawi into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

However, Zimbabwe responded swiftly in the second half, with Tabiwa Chamuchichi finding the back of the net to level the scores. But Mhango wasn’t finished. With just 18 minutes remaining, he once again demonstrated his class, firing home a beautiful finish to restore Malawi’s advantage. Despite facing late pressure from the Young Warriors, Malawi’s defense stood firm, securing a hard-fought narrow victory.
