Mgangira: We were still confident even after Wanderers scored late

Silver Strikers FC Head Coach Peter Mgangira says his team never lost confidence even after conceding in stoppage time during a thrilling TNM Super League encounter against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Blessings Mwalirino looked to have secured all three points for the Nomads when he capitalised on a late defensive lapse from Silver to slot home in added time. But Chinsinsi Maonga salvaged a point for the Bankers with a sensational free-kick, beating Chancy Mtete from distance to level the match dramatically.

Speaking after the game, Mgangira praised his side for their resilience and described the result as a fair outcome for both teams.

“No, we didn’t lose confidence after conceding,” said Mgangira. “What I can say is that people witnessed a very good game today. I think Mighty Wanderers played well in the first half, but we made tactical changes to match them. The second half was evenly contested—chance after chance. We’re happy with a point because it’s never easy to come here and get something against Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium.”

The result preserves Silver Strikers’ unbeaten run against the Nomads over the past two seasons, stretching their streak to eight matches in all competitions. Wanderers have also failed to keep a clean sheet against the Bankers since August 2023—a record Mgangira was quick to highlight.

“It’s a good record to maintain, although we came here for all three points,” he added. “We take the draw and now shift focus to the next game. These are two big teams—just look at the quality, the tactics. Wanderers have strengthened their squad with good players and have an experienced technical panel, so overall, it’s a fair result.”

The draw ends Mighty Wanderers’ perfect start to the season, having won their opening four matches. They remain second on the table with 12 points, five behind leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who have a perfect record from their first six games.

Silver Strikers, the defending champions, sit 10th with eight points from five matches—a position Mgangira admitted is below expectations but expressed confidence they will recover.
