Malawian forward Shaquille Gwengwe joins Poole Town in England

Malawian-born forward Shaquille Gwengwe has officially joined Poole Town Football Club, concluding a three-season spell with Dorchester Town. The move was announced by Poole Town on their official website on Tuesday, expressing their delight at securing the 24-year-old’s signature.

Gwengwe’s new club competes in the Southern League Premier South, the same division as his former team, where Poole Town finished 12th last season.

Welcoming the new addition, Poole Town Joint-Manager Joe Lea commented, “We’re delighted to bring Shaq in. He’s a proven goalscorer in this division, and we are excited to see what he can bring to the squad.”

Upon signing his contract, Gwengwe shared his enthusiasm: “I’m excited to be here and I can’t wait to get started. The club is moving in the right direction. Pat and Joe were a massive reason why I wanted to join, and I wanted to find somewhere I can play my best football, and I believe that is here.”

Gwengwe’s early career saw him feature for various non-league clubs, including Worthing, Blackfield & Langley, and Andover Town, where he experienced success in climbing the football pyramid.

His prolific form truly began during the 2021-22 season at AFC Totton, where he netted an impressive 15 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions. This strong performance led to his move to Dorchester Town.

In his debut season there, Gwengwe quickly became a fan favorite, securing the club’s Golden Boot with 13 goals. He followed this up with an even more impressive 17 goals the subsequent season, attracting interest from several clubs for the 2024/25 campaign. Despite the interest, he chose to remain at Dorchester.

After scoring 10 goals last season for Dorchester, Gwengwe has now made the decision to join Poole Town for the upcoming 2025/26 season, where he will proudly wear the number nine shirt.
