Malawi’s football fans were left heartbroken today after learning that former Flames striker Esau “Black Mamba” Kanyenda has been diagnosed with liver cancer in the UK. writing on his Facebook page mamba asked for prayers as he fight the new battle “Just to let you know that I’m diagnosed with liver cancer here in UK. I’m fighting for this. Need your prayers.” Mamba said.
Black mamba’s football journey is one of the most inspiring in Malawi’s history.

He started his exploits in Chitowe at Dwangwa FC in 1998 before being spotted by South African legend Jomo Sono during the 1999 COSAFA Under-17 tournament. Sono brought him to Jomo Cosmos, where Kanyenda impressed on tours in Italy, finishing as second-top scorer twice.
From there, his career sprouted.He played in the South African Premier League from 2001 to 2003 before making a big move to FC Rostov in Russia. In 2005, after finishing as the third-top scorer in the league, he signed for Lokomotiv Moscow one of the huge achievement for a Malawian player.
Kanyenda went on to play for several clubs in Russia, including FC KAMAZ where he became top scorer, Rotor Volgograd and Dynamo Bryansk.
In 2012, he joined Danish side B93, then returned to South Africa to play for Polokwane City.
Later, he came home and signed with Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, helping them win the 2017 TNM Super League.
He retired a year later, ending a remarkable career that stretched across Africa and Europe.
