“The Council extends its deepest gratitude to all sporting associations and affiliates for their
respectful observance of the guidance to suspend all sporting activities following the tragic demise of the country’s Vice President, Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, and eight officials on 10th June 2024. Your solidarity and support during this time of national grief has been invaluable,” reads the press release in part.

The news comes as a relief to the sporting community, which had been on hold for over a week. With the suspension lifted, sports events and activities are expected to resume their normal schedule.

The council imposed the suspension to honor the passing of Malawi’s Vice President, the Right Honorable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, who was killed in a plane crash last week on Monday, June 10, along with other people on board the Dornier MAF T03.

The plane is said to have “gone off the radar” due to bad weather conditions when Chilima and his entourage were en route to attend a friend’s funeral ceremony, a renowned Malawian lawyer and former government minister, Ralph Kasambara.

As sporting activities resume, MNCS urges the sports fraternity to continue honoring the legacy of Chilima and those who lost their lives in the accident.
