Karonga United head coach Oscar Kaunda has rejected suggestions that his side only performs well against top teams, insisting they deliver consistent performances across the board.
Kaunda’s comments came after his team staged a remarkable late comeback to salvage a 2-2 draw against MAFCO at the Champions Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Karonga United found themselves staring at defeat when they trailed 2-0 with just three minutes remaining. MAFCO had taken control through goals from Zikani Sichinga and China Chirwa, but the visitors refused to surrender.
Substitute Antony Mfune proved to be the catalyst for the comeback, first providing the assist for Godfrey Sibale’s goal in the 88th minute before scoring the equalizer two minutes later to complete a stunning turnaround.
The former Civil Service United coach acknowledged the challenge of playing at the Champions Stadium for the first time but said his team had targeted at least a point from the fixture.
“It’s the first time to play at this stadium and I think in the first half my players were not used to it,” Kaunda explained. “In the second half we conceded two goals, but they didn’t break us—they were long-range shots. We encouraged the players that we could also break them and finish them, which we did.”
Addressing the narrative that Karonga United raise their game only against big opponents, Kaunda pointed to his team’s record across all fixtures.
“We got two points against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers, and the other 32 points we took from the so-called small teams,” he said. “It means we are able to get points against every opponent.”
The hard-earned point lifted Karonga United to fourth place in the standings with 34 points from 20 matches—10 wins, four draws, and six losses.
Next up for the Ingwina syaku Karonga is an away fixture against Mzuzu City Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium. Victory in that encounter could see them leapfrog Silver Strikers into third position and further cement their credentials as genuine title contenders.
