Katinji bags hat-trick as Silver hammer Shire to book quarter-final spot in FDH Cup

Silver Strikers secured their place in the FDH Cup quarter-finals with a convincing 4-1 victory over lower league side FC Shire Wimbe (formerly Panthers FC) at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday afternoon, September 11th, 2025.

The Central Bankers dominated proceedings from the opening whistle, with Binwell Katinji stealing the show by completing his first hat-trick of the 2025 season. Katinji found the net in the 4th, 34th, and 55th minutes, while new signing Andrew Joseph added the fourth goal to seal the comprehensive 4-1 victory.

FC Shire Wimbe managed to pull one back through Vincent Mark’s penalty in the 69th minute, but it proved to be mere consolation as Silver Strikers controlled the tempo throughout the match.

This victory carried extra significance for Silver Strikers, who were seeking revenge against FC Shire Wimbe – the same team that eliminated them from the Castel Cup last year. The hosts had previously beaten the Central Bankers 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes.

Silver Strikers are using both this FDH Cup match and weekend’s Super League fixture against Mighty Wanderers at their home ground, Silver Stadium in Area 47, as preparation matches for their upcoming CAF Champions League campaign.

FC Shire Wimbe coach Katchinga Jere reflected on his team’s performance: “We played well, but conceding silly goals punished us a lot.”

Silver Strikers assistant coach Young Chimodzi Jr expressed satisfaction with the result: “We played well and the early goals helped us settle. Today’s victory is a boost to our team, especially with tomorrow’s game against Wanderers, which will be part of our CAF Champions League preparations.”

FC Shire Wimbe currently sit in 10th position in the Chipiku Premier Division with 15 points from 10 matches, while Silver Strikers occupy 3rd place in the TNM Super League with 36 points from 17 matches.
