A 35th second goal was enough for Karonga United to beat Moyale Barracks and seal their place in the top 8 in the first round after securing a 0-1 victory at the Rumphi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Rajab Juma’s lone strike in the first minute added more woes on the Kaning’ina Lions who have winked into the relegation zone as they have struggled in claim points as their last win came on 24 May 2025 as they have had five draws and four losses in the last 9 games.

The visitors had a strong start into the game after Alfred Chizinga sent a beautiful ball to Rajab Juma to put them ahead with just 35 seconds on the clock then both teams began to attack hard on each other then Patrick Phiri went close on 11th minute with a strike that missed the target.
Charles Nkhoma could have levelled the scores on the half hour-mark but his header missed the target and Chisomo Chawanda tried from a distance but his attempt flied over the ball for Ingwina syaku Karonga to lead at half time.
The hosts introduced Jimmy Viyuyi for Lameck Mithi three minutes into the second half before Nadrick Nyirenda shooting over the bar after combining well with Robert Mphenzi then Benjamin Mapunda came in for Saulos Moyo while Dan Kumwenda replaced Nyirenda and Nkhoma’s attempt in the dying minutes was saved by MacLean Mwale to grant Karonga a win.
Head coach for the visitors, Oscar Kaunda, said the game went according to their plan as they wanted an early goal and defend it.
“I’m very happy to have this win and I thank the boys for the brilliant performance and effort on this game. We planned to get an early goal and defend it which really worked.” Said Kaunda.
Meanwhile, head coach for the soldiers, Prichard Mwansa said his team has lost its touch as they have a lot of problems in the team which needs to be tackled.
” Against Creck we conceded just after two minutes, against Bullets we also conceded in 6 minutes and today in just seconds which is really bad. I think we have to sit down and talk to the boys and us coaches look on how we can fix this so that we return to where we were.” Said Mwansa.
The win took Karonga up to 6th position with 23 points from 7 wins, two draws and five defeats, level on points with fourth placed, Blue Eagles while Moyale Barracks remain 14th on the table with 15 points from three wins, 6 draws and five losses in the League.
