Hastings Kasonga Jnr, a senior reporter for Wa Mpira Online, has been honored with the Best Online Reporter award at the 2024 FDH Bank Cup media awards. Kasonga was recognized for his compelling stories throughout the last season.
FDH Bank Plc, in collaboration with the Football Association of Malawi, celebrated various media practitioners on Tuesday morning in Blantyre. The awards acknowledged their significant contributions to the development of the game and brand visibility during the 2024 season.

Kasonga expressed his delight after receiving the award, stating it would fuel his journalistic work. “I’m so happy to win this award,” he said. “I never thought of it, of course, it is the dream of every reporter to win an award, but it has come sooner than I expected.”
He dedicated the award to his team at Wa Mpira. “Special thanks to Wa Mpira as a group, this is for all of us,” Kasonga added. “We started as young boys some years ago, and now we are being recognized as one of the best. This is the first of many. We will be fighting for more awards and for the Wa Mpira badge. Initially, we used to write for passion, but with this award, I will definitely pull up my socks.”
Kasonga brings seven years of online reporting experience to his role, having joined Wa Mpira three years ago.
In other categories, Dickson Chivwati Gondwe and Twimeponi Mangani of Zodiak Broadcasting Station were named Best Radio and Television Journalists, respectively. Yohane M’bwera of Litala FM secured the Best Community Radio Journalist award for the South, while Patrick Bupha of PLFM and Walughano Lumbira of Voice of Livingstonia won for the Centre and North regions, respectively.
The awards ceremony was held at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre, coinciding with the 2025 FDH Bank Cup preliminary round draw. National-level winners each received MK200,000, while regional winners were awarded MK100,000
