The Football Players Association of Malawi (FPA) has set February 28, 2026, as the deadline for teams to release players they do not intend to retain for the 2026-27 season, allowing those players sufficient time to find new clubs.
The Association’s General Secretary, Ernest Mangani, announced the directive after observing that some teams release players close to the season’s kick-off, leaving them stranded without adequate time to secure new contracts.

He warned teams against exceeding the deadline, stating that doing so would violate players’ rights and freedoms.
“After a season, teams know which players are not part of their plans, so it is better to release them in good time so they can find new teams rather than being released when the transfer window is about to close,” said Mangani.
He also urged players from various teams to join the Association, emphasizing that it helps protect players’ freedoms and welfare within their clubs.
Meanwhile, Mangani revealed that the FPA is in discussions with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to make FPA membership compulsory for Super League players starting next season.
The Association was established to safeguard the rights, freedoms, and welfare of players in their teams. Players from the Super League, National Division League, National Women’s Premiership, and regional leagues are eligible to join, provided they have valid contracts with their teams.
