Forty-four weeks ago, Silver Strikers suffered a shocking defeat at home to Panthers FC (now Shire FC) in the Castel Challenge Cup. The Bankers mounted an impressive comeback from 2-0 down to level the match 2-2 in regulation time, but their familiar weakness in penalty shootouts proved costly once again. They lost 4-3 on penalties, allowing the Area 49-based side to progress to the next round.
Shire FC went on to become the tournament’s surprise package, eliminating Chitipa United, Mafco FC, Silver Strikers, and Civil Service United before eventually losing to Mighty Wanderers in the semifinals.

Coincidentally, the two teams have been paired up again in this season’s FDH Bank Cup, setting up a crucial rematch. This begins an intense two-week period for the Central Bankers, who will compete across three different competitions.
After today’s match, Silver Strikers will host fellow title contenders Mighty Wanderers at Silver Stadium in the TNM Super League, followed by back-to-back fixtures against Madagascar side Elgeco Plus.
Both teams earned their way to this stage through convincing victories: Silver Strikers eliminated Mighty Tigers in the round of 32, while Shire FC dominated National Division League side Jenda FC.
Head Coach Peter Mgangira emphasized the importance of taking their third-tier opponents seriously ahead of this afternoon’s match at Civo Stadium.
“After the international break, the boys look sharp and refreshed,” Mgangira said. “Before the break, we played back-to-back games in a very short period, so this rest has helped the players regain their shape.
“As we prepare to face Shire FC, we don’t want to underestimate them because they’re a quality side. If they’ve managed to reach this level, it means they deserve respect and we must avoid complacency at all costs.”
Shire FC have struggled in the Chipiku Central Region League this season, losing five of their 11 matches while winning six. However, they enter today’s game on a positive note, having secured three consecutive victories, including a commanding 3-0 win over TN Stars in their most recent outing.
Silver Strikers, meanwhile, are performing well in the top flight with 36 points, sitting just four points behind the league leaders. They’ll be eager to maintain their strong recent form against Shire FC.
“Opportunity for Redemption”

Last season proved particularly frustrating for Silver Strikers in cup competitions, as they were eliminated by two Chipiku League teams. Blue Eagles knocked them out of the FDH Bank Cup on penalties, while Shire FC stunned them at home in the Castel Challenge Cup.
Mgangira views today’s match as a chance to restore the club’s reputation.
“The players know this team eliminated us last season,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for us to show that we are giants of the game.
“There are no small teams in cup football because reaching this stage demonstrates quality. These teams come with hunger because many of their players aspire to play for clubs like Silver Strikers. But I’m confident that with our quality and determination, we will prevail at the end of the game.”
