Mighty Waka Waka Tigers are returning home with three points from a possible 6 after a late strike from Precious Chipungu to snatch a win over struggling Chitipa United on Thursday afternoon at the Karonga Stadium.
The Kau-Kau boys have condemned the 2023 TNM Super League surprise package to their third defeat of the season in four games and it was Tigers’ second win of the season.
After a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Karonga United in their previous game, Tigers were looking to bounce back to winning ways and record their second straight win over Chitipa as they were 2-1 winners in their previous game in Blantyre.
Leo Mpulura’s side has just lost one game in their previous four, winning two and drawing once. Chitipa heading into the home game were looking for a response after a narrow 1-0 defeat to rookies, Friends of Mulanje Orphans, and FOMO Football Club in Mulanje.
Chitipa had a great start to the game but they couldn’t utilize the chances. They created two chances within the first five minutes thanks to Lucky Tizola for a brilliant performance which earned him the player of the match award.
Gideon Sululu’s attempt flew over the bar before Ramadan Ntafu who plundered a hat-trick against Chitipa United rattled the post with a fine strike.
The pendulum swung to the other side as Tigers settled down in the game. The goal-scorer, Chipungu could have stunned the hosts in the first half but his effort was thwarted by Barton Silavwe before Chris Liwemba blocked Precious Chiudza’s goal-bound ball.
After a barren draw in the first half, Chitipa started the game as they did in the first half with Stimera Muyira and Pascal Mwbwanje missing clear-cut chances.
As the game was destined to be a barren draw, a moment of magic from Chipungu changed it all. Shukran Afick found the striker in a good space and he couldn’t disappoint as he powered his shot into the back of the net in the 92nd minute.
Tigers move up to 8th on the table while Chitipa United are just a point above the relegation zone.
