Karonga United Football Club Chairperson Alufeyo Deacon Chipanga Banda has resigned from his position following pressure from supporters over a controversial venue decision.

The resignation comes after tensions erupted last week when club officials announced that Karonga’s fixture against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets would be played at Chitipa Stadium rather than their home ground.

The decision sparked immediate backlash from supporters, who recorded a video demanding Chipanga’s resignation and accusing him of “individualizing the club.” Following the outcry, the venue was switched back to Karonga Stadium, but the damage to Chipanga’s position appeared irreversible.

Club officials defended the initial decision to move the match to Chitipa on financial grounds, citing poor gate receipts in Karonga. “People in Karonga do not pay to watch games,” officials explained when justifying the venue change.

Speaking to Times Sports, Chipanga confirmed he has submitted his resignation letter to the club’s executive committee, saying he wants to “take a break.” Karonga United’s Secretary General Ramsey Simwaka declined to comment on the matter.

Chipanga’s departure marks the end of an 11-year tenure at the helm of Karonga United, which he joined in 2014. Under his leadership, the club has grown into one of the TNM Super League’s established sides.

His achievements include multiple appearances in the Airtel Top 8 Cup, with the club reaching the final in 2019. Karonga United has maintained competitive status in the top flight throughout his chairmanship.

The club currently sits fifth in the league table with 40 points from 26 games and remains in contention for a top-four finish, which would represent a successful season despite the off-field turmoil.

The club has not yet announced plans for appointing Chipanga’s successor.
