FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Assistant Coach Gilbert Chirwa has stood by goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu despite a series of costly mistakes that have raised concerns among supporters.

The People’s Team returned to the top of the table on Sunday afternoon following a thrilling 4-3 victory over Civil Service United at Kamuzu Stadium, though the match was marred by another error from their number one.

Civil Service United struck first after Bullets failed to clear a corner kick, with Chikaiko Batison heading home to give his side the lead. Peter Banda equalized for Bullets shortly after, but Nyasulu’s blunder restored Civil’s advantage before halftime.

The goalkeeper’s attempt to build from the back went disastrously wrong as his misplaced pass landed at Batison’s feet, allowing the striker to complete his brace with ease.

Bullets fought back through Chikumbutso Salima, who scored twice before the break to give his side a 3-2 lead. Salima completed his hat-trick in the second half, but Batison also netted his third to set up a tense finish at 4-3.

Nyasulu’s error against Civil comes just days after a difficult outing in the Blantyre Derby, where Bullets suffered a 3-0 defeat to Mighty Wanderers. The goalkeeper was at fault for two of those goals, raising questions about his form and confidence.

The 26-year-old has now conceded six goals in his last three matches, contributing to Bullets’ total of 16 goals conceded in 23 league games this season.

Despite mounting pressure, Chirwa offered his full support to the embattled goalkeeper in his post-match comments.

“Nyasulu is a very good goalkeeper. He has been doing a good job for us,” Chirwa said. “These things happen in football, and we will sit down with him to work through it.”

Bullets’ options between the posts are currently limited following Richard Chimbamba’s departure from training due to reported issues with the technical panel. This has left Nyasulu as the undisputed first choice, despite his recent struggles.
