Joseph Mwambungu’s lone goal ended Mitundu Baptist’s flawless start to the NBS Bank National Division League on Saturday afternoon. Baka City, playing at home in Karonga, secured a 1-0 victory, maintaining their own unbeaten run and handing Baptist their first loss of the season.

Mitundu Baptist entered the match having won their opening three fixtures. However, Baka City capitalized on their home advantage, finding the decisive goal in the second half.

“We were facing a team that is on top of us, so getting a win means we have minimized the gap on them. The League starts today!” exclaimed an excited Victor Mwakhwawa, head coach for Baka City, after the match.

Conversely, Mitundu Baptist’s Audrow Makonyola voiced his displeasure with the officiating. “I have been hearing of what happens here, but I have seen it myself. The officiation in Karonga helps home teams, but it happens, we move on,” he commented.

Chintheche’s Incredible Turnaround in Rumphi

In a thrilling encounter at Rumphi Stadium, Chintheche United pulled off a masterclass comeback to deny Ndirande Stars their first win of the season, scoring three goals in a dramatic 10-minute spell to claim a 3-2 victory.

Ndirande Stars had enjoyed a brilliant first half, with Imran Dickson and Madalitso Geoffrey netting inside the half-hour mark to give them a comfortable 2-0 lead. However, Robin Chioko pulled one back for Chintheche on the hour-mark, setting the stage for Jimmy Kalanje to score a quick double and complete the stunning turnaround.

“Ndirande were good on the ball in the first half; they created three chances and took two,” said John Kapyepye, head coach for Chintheche United. “But in the second half, we came strong and scored those three goals.”

Ndirande Stars head coach Robert Daudi lamented his team’s inability to maintain their lead. “We were so good in the first half as we scored two goals, but we failed to replicate the first half in the second half, hence we lost. It happens in football; we’ve learned and we move forward,” Daudi stated.

Chintheche United now sits fourth on the table with 7 points from two wins, one draw, and one loss. Ndirande Stars, still searching for their first victory, are down to 10th place with two points from two draws and two defeats.
