A Leap of Faith: Chatama’s Bold Move to Ekhaya United

For eight years, Enos Chatama was synonymous with success at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. As head coach of the Reserve team, he nurtured a generation of players who now form the backbone of Bullets’ senior squad. Under his guidance, talents like Hassan Kajoke, Chimwemwe Idana, and Patrick Mwaungulu blossomed, cementing Chatama’s reputation as a trusted developer of young footballers.

So when his contract expired, many expected him to extend his stay at the club that had become his second home. Bullets offered him a new deal, while Mighty Wanderers, Silver Strikers, and Mzuzu City Hammers all expressed interest in his services. Yet, to the surprise of many, Chatama chose a different path — a leap into the unknown with newly promoted Ekhaya United.

“It was a tough decision to leave a club that has been my family for many years,” Chatama admitted. “But it was time for me to take on a new challenge.”

Ekhaya United, a club only two years old, had already made waves by winning the Southern Region Division 1 League and earning promotion to the Premier Division. Their journey, however, was far from smooth. Expectations were high, but the team struggled initially, finishing fifth in the group stages. Their hopes for promotion seemed dashed until a twist of fate — a points deduction for Mangochi All Stars — gave them a second chance. Ekhaya seized the opportunity, winning the Thumbs Up Premier League and securing a place in the TNM Super League.

Despite their success, Ekhaya faced a challenge: they needed a coach with a CAF B or A license to lead them in the elite league. Their technical director, Gerald Phiri Senior, declined the offer. That’s when they turned to Chatama.

“After learning about their ambition, I didn’t think twice,” Chatama said. “They are a development-focused team, and I love working with young players. We are both inexperienced at this level, but we will grow together.”

Ekhaya United’s Chief Executive Officer, Thando Mhango, echoed this sentiment. “Everyone in the Super League started from somewhere. We believe Enos Chatama is the right coach to propel us in the right direction.”

Chatama’s decision was driven by more than just ambition; it was a belief in Ekhaya’s vision. “I chose Ekhaya because they are an ambitious team that wants to develop the game step by step. We are not under pressure.”

As he embarks on this new chapter, Chatama knows the road ahead won’t be easy. But with a shared passion for development and a hunger for growth, both coach and club are ready to face the challenges of the TNM Super League together.

This is more than a career move for Chatama—it’s a leap of faith, one that could redefine his legacy and shape the future of Ekhaya United.
