Women’s football clubs in the Southern Region have boycotted all Regional Women’s Football League matches over unpaid subventions and outstanding player bonuses, citing the Football Association of Malawi’s (FAM) failure to resolve the long-standing financial issues.

According to a letter obtained by Wa Mpira and addressed to FAM, with copies sent to the National Women’s Football Association (NWFA), the clubs say the lack of funding has severely affected their operations, including match logistics and general administration.

“Despite several assurances and engagements on these matters, no tangible action or clear communication has been provided to date,” the letter states.

The clubs further indicated that the non-payment of player bonuses has negatively impacted player morale and welfare, undermining the integrity and growth of women’s football in the region.

“We wish to emphasize that this boycott is not an act of defiance but rather a last resort taken to safeguard the dignity, welfare, and rights of women football players and officials who continue to make sacrifices for the game under difficult circumstances,” the statement reads.

The clubs have reaffirmed their commitment to football development and assured FAM of their readiness to resume league activities once the outstanding subventions and player bonuses are settled.

Similar payment issues are affecting regional women’s football leagues across the country, Wa Mpira has learned.

FAM had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
